Dear Friend,
On Thursday, June 25, the House Education and Workforce Committee took an important step forward for fraternity and sorority students by passing the Freedom of Association in Higher Education Act (H.R. 2555/S. 1225) out of committee.
The legislation now advances to the full House of Representatives for consideration later this year.
This marks the third time in the past seven years that the House Education and Workforce Committee has approved this legislation—twice under Republican leadership and once under Democratic leadership. That history underscores an important reality: protecting students’ freedom to associate with organizations that reflect their values is not a partisan issue. It is a fundamental principle that continues to garner support across the political spectrum.
The Freedom of Association in Higher Education Act would prohibit colleges and universities from denying recognition, benefits, or resources to student organizations solely because they require their leaders or members to affirm and support the organization’s mission and values. The legislation protects the rights of all student organizations—fraternities and sororities, religious groups, political organizations, and others—to determine their own membership and leadership standards without fear of institutional discrimination.
This progress did not happen by accident.
For years, FSPAC has worked to educate lawmakers, build relationships, support advocacy efforts, and ensure that the voices of fraternity and sorority members are heard in Washington. The momentum we are seeing today is the result of sustained engagement and the commitment of supporters like you.
While this committee vote is a significant milestone, our work is far from finished. The bill must still pass the full House and continue through the legislative process. Achieving that goal will require continued advocacy, outreach, and engagement.
As we celebrate this important victory, I hope you will consider making a contribution to FSPAC. Your support helps ensure that we can continue building on this momentum and advancing policies that protect the rights and opportunities of fraternity and sorority students across the country.
Thank you for standing with us and for your commitment to the future of fraternity and sorority life.
Sincerely,
Steve Blair
