Greek students and leaders at the University of Maryland are protesting the university’s decision to suspend 35 Greek organizations, which bans them from recruiting and hosting social events with alcohol.
On March 1, the university suspended social activities and new member recruitment for fraternities and sororities affiliated with the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhellenic Council (PHA).
This decision came after university officials sent a letter to organizations, citing activities that threatened the safety and well-being of the university community. In it, the university indicated that certain chapters engaged in activities endangering student safety, urging a review of anti-hazing policies, but remained silent on the specifics of the allegations or the duration of the investigation and suspension. The university also imposed a social moratorium, banning events with alcohol.
Many in the Greek community argue this action unjustly punishes those adhering to the regulations without due process. They are also voicing their concerns, emphasizing the negative impact on social life and mental health, and calling for accountability to be limited to individuals who violated the rules.
This blanket suspension is another example on why the Fraternity and Sorority Political Action Committee contributes to candidates who support federal policies that:
- Improve campus safety with anti-hazing legislation;
- Protect students’ right to freedom of association; and
- Ensure due process rights for students and member organizations.
